"An activist is not a man who says the river is dirty The activist is the man who cleans up the river"
Taken just outside the entrance of the Kodanad Elephant Training Centre (Kodanad, Kerala, India) in July 2014.
Not really a fan of this quote. It’s shortsighted.
Why would anyone draw attention to the dirt settling in the river unless they had the intention of convincing people it’s dirty? The cleanup can only begin once you force people to acknowledge the filth.
Seems like a ploy to downplay certain activist efforts as “not real” activism, when there are several roles that need to be taken on within a movement. Each of which are essential to it’s mission. Just because the the result isn’t immediately visible doesn’t mean it’s not there.
It’s like the point of this vague quote is to say “THAT’S not a real activist, THIS is” when there’s no real contrasting difference here. An activist spirit is an activist spirit, it’ll find a way to make a difference however big or small.
